Movie Adaptations

They're going to try to make movies of the Hyperion Cantos? So says this article... And as an afterthought, the story also mentions that they're doing Brin's Startide Rising.

I am scared for both cases.

Ick. I agree. Hyperion will be a bear to try and turn into a movie ... all the different timelines and points of view are confusing enough when you read it the first time, let alone trying to tell it as a movie.

Well, of course, rewriting the story to cut out all the weird crucifix stuff and the boring Catholic theology that no one would understand might be a bit tricky, but really, can't you just imagine the climactic scene where the Colonel defeats the Shrike in a fist fight, thus saving the universe from the machine empire, and then marries the girl backwardly-aged to a nubile 16?

Shame about having to cut out all the bits about Keats, but really, who wants to hear about Keats after college anyway?

Bah to both. I just recently read the Hyperion Cantos and I'm reading Startide Rising right now.

At least Startide Rising has a plot which might bear conversion to a movie. The Hyperion Cantos is too rife with flashbacks, time travel, and philosophy to make much sense at all in movie form.
