Science Funding

"US Stands To Lose A Generation Of Young Researchers"

Since I'm not working for a research group directly anymore, I'm both less-affected and less-knowledgeable about this kind of stuff than I used to be. But it still hits home, and I agree with those complaining about the funding situation. Dammit, fund basic science! Give out those R01 grants!

What do we need science for? If we pray hard enough, God will provide everything we need!

The sad & terrifying thing is that the tenor of the conversations amongst the early-career life-sci researchers around me has started to sound distressingly similar to the conversations the early-career physicists were having a decade ago. The outcome for physics was not good.

When I came to interview here, three days before the 2004 election, my panel was openly -- brazenly -- concerned about the election: they knew what was riding on it and how difficult it would be to reverse the funding damage.
